My Month in Myusic

March 1, 2009

March is shaping up to be a tremendous month for me. First, on Tuesday, this delightfully understated Irish quartet will release their new album. Now, honestly, I’m a bit iffy about it. I haven’t loved the little I’ve heard from it, thus far. Still, I respect their catalog enough that I’ll pick it up and give it a fair listen. Still, their album is not what I’m talking about. I’m talking about my own personal March Madness. I’m talking shows! Five of ‘em!

So, here’s what’s on tap:

Saturday, March 7: Ustad Shujaat Khan and Karsh Kale featuring Vijay Iyer and Jonathan Maron at the Starr Theatre at Alice Tully Hall

My first venture to this gorgeous, newly renovated venue.

Saturday, March 14: The Allman Brothers Band at the Beacon Theatre

Last time I saw them, it was in the driving rain at the PNC Bank Arts Center. Plus, they’re always better at the Beacon.

Monday, March 16: The Ting Tings at Webster Hall Terminal 5

I can’t wait to see them again. Outstanding show, last time. My only potential gripe is that they moved it from Webster Hall to Terminal 5, which is really my least favorite place to see a show. The sound is cold and echoes and the sight-lines are awful.

Friday, March 27: Gaslight Anthem at Webster Hall

I dig their album and my buddy is stoked for this show. I probably wouldn’t be going if not for him, but I’m prepared to be impressed.

Monday, March 30: The Hold Steady at Irving Plaza

This is WRXP’s anniversary show. It’s among my favorite venues and I think it will be a great show. The Rosewood Thieves are opening up and I wouldn’t be surprised if some other acts are announced in the coming week or so.

Saw The Allman Brothers at the Beacon in ’95 or ’96. They were great then and probably still are. How many shows do you think they’ve done there over the years?

Figure 10-15 a year since ’89, missing only last year because Gregg was still recovering from Hep C. I’d guess north of 200.
